What is Caltrate (calcium carbonate) used for? |
Caltrate (calcium carbonate) is used as a dietary supplement where calcium intake may be inadequate i.e during childhood, adolescence, pregnancy, lactation, and in postmenopausal women and the aged. Caltrate (calcium carbonate) is also prescribed to treat calcium deficiency states which may occur in diseases such as hypoparathyroidism (acute and chronic), pseudohypoparathyroidism, postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis, rickets and osteomalacia.

When should Caltrate (calcium carbonate) not be taken?
|
Do not take Caltrate (calcium carbonate) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Caltrate (calcium carbonate) hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria (e.g., hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D overdosage, decalcifying tumors such as plasmocytoma; bone metastases); severe renal disease; and in calcium loss due to immobilization. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Caltrate (calcium carbonate) ?

Before using Caltrate (calcium carbonate), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have any other medical condition like impaired kidney function, kidney stones |

Keep out of the reach of children. Bottle sealed with printed foil under cap, do not use if foil is torn. |

How should I take Caltrate (calcium carbonate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Caltrate (calcium carbonate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Caltrate (calcium carbonate) may be recommended by your doctor or pharmacist as a source of calcium. Do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Caltrate (calcium carbonate) can interact with certain medicines. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations and dietary supplements. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Caltrate (calcium carbonate). Do not take more medicine than recommended unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of Caltrate (calcium carbonate). If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.

Store Caltrate (calcium carbonate) at room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F). Store in a tightly closed container, out of the reach of children. |
