What precautions should I follow when taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) ?

Before using Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparations, or dietary supplements if you have ulcers or other gastro-intestinal problems, if you have severe kidney problems if you are taking azathioprine if you have Lesch-Nyhan or Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome if you have any other medical condition. |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil)?

Patients taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) may develop infections or certain kinds of cancer (lymphoma) more easily. It should only be used under the care of a health care provider experienced in the use of Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). Do not open the capsules or crush or chew the tablets. Do not inhale the powder, or allow the powder or suspension to come in contact with your skin, eyes, or mucous membranes. If contact with the skin, eyes or mucous membranes occurs, wash your skin with soap and water and rinse your eyes with plain water. Tell your doctor and dentist that you are taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) before having surgery, before starting any other medicines, and before receiving any vaccinations. |
What are the side effects of Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil)?

Most severe: Infection (fever; chills; sore throat); skin lesions; unusual bleeding or bruising; enlarged abdomen; unusual tiredness; blood in the urine; infrequent urination; changes in heart rhythm; yellowing of the skin or eyes; severe allergic reactions (giant hives; swelling of the mouth or tongue; difficulty breathing).

Most common: Pain; stomach pain; fever; headache; weakness; chest pain; back pain; urinary tract infection; swelling; diarrhea; constipation; nausea; indigestion; vomiting; oral infection; difficulty breathing; increased cough; sore throat; acne; tremor; sleeplessness; dizziness.

Other: Weight gain; abnormal healing; gas; appetite loss; sinus infection; runny nose; asthma; anxiety; abnormal skin sensations; stiff muscles; depression; agitation; drowsiness; confusion; nervousness; leg cramps; muscle weakness; muscle pain; vision changes.

How should I take Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) will be prepared by a qualified health care provider. Read and carefully follow the patient instructions given to you by your health care provider. Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) is taken twice daily. The first dose of Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) should be taken as soon as possible after transplant surgery. Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) should be taken on an empty stomach. It may be taken with food if necessary. Do not take antacids at the same time you take Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). Do not inhale the dry powder. Avoid direct contact with skin or mucous membranes. If contact occurs, wash thoroughly with soap and water and rinse eyes with plain water. Women of childbearing potential should be made aware of the potential risks to the fetus if they use Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) during pregnancy. Effective forms of birth control should be used before beginning Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil), while taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil), and for 6 weeks after Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) has been stopped. Contact your health care provider at once if you suspect that you are pregnant. Contact your health care provider immediately if any signs of infection, unexpected bruising, or bleeding occurs while taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) may increase the risk of skin cancer. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing while taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). Avoid vaccinations with live vaccines (eg, measles, mumps, oral polio) while you are taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). The vaccinations may be less effective. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

How should Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) be stored?
|
|
Store Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) dry powder at 77 degrees F. Store mixed suspension at 77 degrees F for up to 60 days. You may also store mixed suspension in refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F. Do not freeze. |
