What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Ferrous Sulfate (iron)?

It is best to take Ferrous Sulfate (iron) on an empty stomach. Do not crush or chew the tablets, swallow them whole. Do not take Ferrous Sulfate (iron) with dairy products or antacids. If you need to take an antacid, take it 2 hours after a dose of Ferrous Sulfate (iron). Do not use Ferrous Sulfate (iron) longer than prescribed, and do not take a higher dose than recommended. Long-term use may cause excess iron to build-up in the body. |
What are the side effects of Ferrous Sulfate (iron)?

Most severe: Blue lips, palms or nails, cold, pale and clammy hands, weak, irregular or fast heartbeat, seizures, unusual tiredness, stomach pain, vomiting.

Most common: Stomach pain; nausea; constipation; diarrhea; darkened stools.
|

Other: Pain on swallowing, drowziness
|
How should I take Ferrous Sulfate (iron)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often it is taken depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Ferrous Sulfate (iron) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Ferrous Sulfate (iron) as directed by your health care provider. Swallow Tablet whole. Do not crush or chew the Tablet. Ferrous Sulfate (iron) may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline Antibiotic. Do not take Ferrous Sulfate (iron) within 2 hours of taking tetracycline. If nausea or stomach discomfort occurs, take Ferrous Sulfate (iron) with or immediately after meals. Contact your doctor if constipation and diarrhea occurs. Contact your doctor at once if you think you have given your child too much medicine. Stools may become darker while you are taking Ferrous Sulfate (iron). This is normal and should be no cause for concern. Do not stop taking Ferrous Sulfate (iron) without talking with your health care provider. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before using Ferrous Sulfate (iron). Do not take more medicine than recommended unless advised to do so by your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your health care provider at your next appointment.
