What is Imuran (azathioprine) used for? |
Imuran (azathioprine) is used with other therapy to prevent kidney transplant failure. It is also used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis that does not respond to other treatment.

When should Imuran (azathioprine) not be taken?
|
Do not take Imuran (azathioprine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Imuran (azathioprine) you are pregnant and have rheumatoid arthritis you have used alkylating agents for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Do not use Imuran (azathioprine) to treat rheumatoid arthritis in children. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Imuran (azathioprine) ?

Before using Imuran (azathioprine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you are taking allopurinol, warfarin, Bactrim , Septra , or Captopril -type medications if you have any other medical condition, especially signs of bone marrow depression (infection, bleeding tendencies), impaired renal function or gastrointestinal toxicity. |

Imuran (azathioprine) may increase your risk of developing certain kinds of tumors. Doctors using Imuran (azathioprine) should be very familiar with this risk and with the risk of genetic changes to both men and women and with the risk of possible blood disorders. |
What are the side effects of Imuran (azathioprine)?
|
|
Most severe: Serious infection (fever, chills, sore throat); severe allergic reactions (rash; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face or throat).

Most common: Nausea; vomiting, diarrhea, fever, malaise, and myalgias
|
|
Other: Vomiting with stomach pain; hair loss; joint pain; oily stools; rash.

How should I take Imuran (azathioprine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Imuran (azathioprine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Imuran (azathioprine) may be taken after meals to avoid stomach upset. Report any unusual bleeding, bruising, or signs of infection to your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Imuran (azathioprine). Contact your doctor if you suspect that you are pregnant. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Imuran (azathioprine) between 59 and 77 degrees F in a dry place. Keep in a tight, light-resistant container. |
