Indocin (indomethacin) is used to relieve the inflammation, swelling, stiffness and joint pain associated with moderate or severe rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also used to treat bursitis, tendinitis (acute painful shoulder), acute gouty arthritis, and other kinds of pain.

Do not take Indocin (indomethacin) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Indocin (indomethacin) or to similar medications, if you are taking aspirin or beta blockers, if you have had asthma attacks caused by aspirin

Before using Indocin (indomethacin), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart disease, lung disease, impairment of kidney or liver functions.

Use Indocin (indomethacin) with caution if you are taking blood thinning medication. Indocin (indomethacin) should be used with caution if you have kidney or liver disease, and it can cause liver inflammation in some people.

Other: Anemia, anxiety, asthma, behavior disturbances, bloating, blurred vision, breast changes, changes in heart rate, chest pain, coma, congestive heart failure, convulsions, decrease in white blood cells, fever, fluid in lungs, fluid retention, flushing, gas, hair loss, hepatitis, high or low blood pressure

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Indocin (indomethacin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Severe high blood pressure can occur if certain nasal decongestants are taken with Indocin (indomethacin). Indocin (indomethacin) may produce dizziness or drowsiness; patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not stop taking Indocin (indomethacin) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Indocin (indomethacin). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take Indocin (indomethacin) on an empty stomach, always take it with food or milk and a full glass of water. Do not lie down for about 20 to 30 minutes after taking Indocin (indomethacin). This helps prevent irritation that could lead to trouble in swallowing. Indocin (indomethacin) may also cause confusion and, rarely, psychosis, especially in older adults.

Store Indocin (indomethacin) at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets.
