What is Largactil (chlorpromazine) used for?

Largactil (chlorpromazine) is used to treat psychotic disorders and porphyria; to control nausea and vomiting; to control signs of mania; to relieve restlessness and fear before surgery as well as severe hiccups. It may also be used to treat severe behavior problems and for the short-term treatment of hyperactivity in children.

When should Largactil (chlorpromazine) not be taken?

Do not use Largactil (chlorpromazine) if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in Largactil (chlorpromazine) or to similar medications you and/or your child are taking large amounts of CNS depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics)

What precautions should I follow when taking Largactil (chlorpromazine) ?

Before using Largactil (chlorpromazine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you and/or your child are taking any other prescription medicine (especially atropine or blood thinners), nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you and/or your child have heart disease if you and/or your child have liver disease if you and/or your child have severe asthma, emphysema, or acute respiratory tract infections if you and/or your child have a history of seizures if you have glaucoma if you and/or your child have any other medical condition do not take Largactil (chlorpromazine) within 2 hours of taking antacids or medicine for diarrhea taking Largactil (chlorpromazine) together with medicines that are used during surgery, dental treatments, or emergency treatments may increase CNS depression or cause low blood pressure.

Largactil (chlorpromazine) may cause unwanted, unattractive, and uncontrolled face or body movements that may not go away when you stop taking Largactil (chlorpromazine).

What are the side effects of Largactil (chlorpromazine)?

Most severe:  Increased body heat; muscle rigidness; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; irregular pulse and blood pressure; increased heart rate; sweating; irregular heart rhythm; seizures; allergic reactions (rash; hives; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); yellowing of the skin or eyes; muscle restlessness; tremors; drooling; muscle stiffness/rigidity; shuffling walk; unusual eye movements; involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, protrusion of tongue, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements); involuntary movements of the arms and legs; muscle spasms; infection (fever, chills, sore throat).
Most common:  Drowsiness; fever; neck spasms; rigid back muscles; difficulty swallowing; agitation; jitteriness; asthma; excessive hunger, thirst, or urination; dry mouth; stuffy nose; nausea; constipation; urinary retention; pupil dilation; impotence; sleeplessness.
Other:  Sensitivity to sunlight; lactation and breast enlargement in women; absence of menstruation; painful erection; changes in skin color; changes in vision; increased appetite; weight gain; swelling of the legs and feet. Do not stop using this medicin

How should I take Largactil (chlorpromazine)?

How much medicine you use and how often you use it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Largactil (chlorpromazine) you are use, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Largactil (chlorpromazine) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Use Largactil (chlorpromazine) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Notify your doctor of any signs of infection, including fever, sore throat, rash, or chills. Involuntary and uncontrollable muscle movements may develop in patients treated with Largactil (chlorpromazine). Occurrence is highest among the elderly, especially in women. The risk of developing these involuntary movements and the likelihood that they will become permanent are increased as the length of treatment and the total amount of medicine given increases. However, it is possible to develop these symptoms after short-term treatment at low doses. Contact your health care provider at once if any of the following occur: Involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, protrusion of tongue, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements), sometimes accompanied by involuntary movements of the arms and legs. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a potentially deadly syndrome associated with Largactil (chlorpromazine). Symptoms include the following: Increased body heat; muscle rigidness; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; irregular pulse and blood pressure; increased heart rate; sweating; irregular heart rhythm. Contact your doctor at once if any of these symptoms occur. Contact your health care provider at once if any of the following Parkinson-like symptoms occur: Muscle restlessness; tremors; drooling; muscle stiffness/rigidity; shuffling walk; unusual eye movements. Avoid extreme heat or exposure to insecticides. Do not drink alcohol while taking Largactil (chlorpromazine). Largactil (chlorpromazine) may cause drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Largactil (chlorpromazine) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light (eg, tanning beds). Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing and sunglasses until tolerance is determined. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Largactil (chlorpromazine) should not be used in children under 6 months of age except where potentially life-saving. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before using Largactil (chlorpromazine). Do not stop using Largactil (chlorpromazine) without checking with your doctor. Do not use more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have used too much of Largactil (chlorpromazine). Do not take/give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, use it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
