What is Orajel (benzocaine) used for? |
Orajel (benzocaine) is used to provide temporary relief of pain, discomfort, soreness and minor irritation of the mouth and gums due to teething in infants and children 4 months and older.

When should Orajel (benzocaine) not be taken?

Do not take Orajel (benzocaine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Orajel (benzocaine) or to similar medications |
What precautions should I follow when taking Orajel (benzocaine) ?

Before using Orajel (benzocaine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if your child is taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Orajel (benzocaine)?

Keep Orajel (benzocaine) out of reach of children. In case of overdose or allergic reaction, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. Do not use Orajel (benzocaine) if your baby has a history of allergy to local anesthetics such as procaine, butacaine, benzocaine or other "caine" anesthetics |
What are the side effects of Orajel (benzocaine)?

Most severe: Swelling; rash; fever.

Most common: Burning sensation, sore mouth

Other: Irritation, pain, redness

How should I take Orajel (benzocaine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Orajel (benzocaine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Apply a small amount of Orajel (benzocaine) to the affected gum area 3-4 times / day. Do not use Orajel (benzocaine) for more than 7 days unless directed to do so by your health care provider or dentist. If sore mouth symptoms do not improve in 7 days, or if irritation, pain, or redness continues or worsens, or if swelling, rash, or fever develops, talk with your health care provider at once. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Orajel (benzocaine). Do not take more medicine than is recommended unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider.
