What is Orap (pimozide) used for? |
Orap (pimozide) is used to suppress tics or spasms of Tourette's disorder in patients who do not respond to other medications.

When should Orap (pimozide) not be taken?
|
Do not take/give Orap (pimozide) if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in Orap (pimozide) you are taking large amounts of CNS depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics) you and/or your child have experienced simple tics or tics other than those associated with Tourette's disorder you and/or your child are taking medications that may cause motor or sound tics (eg, pemoline, methylphenidate, amphetamines) you and/or your child have heart problems you and/or your child have severe toxic central nervous system depression you and/or your child are currently taking macrolide antibiotics (eg, clarithromycin, erythromycin, dirithromycin, troleandomycin) you and/or your child are currently taking protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, saquinavir, indinavir, nelfinavir) you and/or your child are taking itraconazole or ketoconazole you and/or your child are taking CYP 3A inhibitors (eg, nefazodone, zileuton) |
What precautions should I follow when taking Orap (pimozide) ?

Before using Orap (pimozide), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you and/or your child are taking any prescription medicine (especially for seizures), nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you and/or your child have impaired kidney or liver function if you and/or your child have a history of seizures if you and/or your child have any other medical condition |

Do not use Orap (pimozide) in the management of manifestations of chronic schizophrenia in which the main symptoms include agitation, excitement and anxiety. |

Most severe: Muscle restlessness; tremors; drooling; muscle stiffness/rigidity; shuffling walk; unusual eye movements; involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth or jaw (eg, protrusion of tongue, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements

Most common: Dry mouth; constipation; muscle tightness; stooped posture; impaired movement; stiffness; drowsiness; restlessness; speech problems; vision problems; impotence; changes in behavior.

Other: Diarrhea; headache; thirst; increased appetite; handwriting change; nervousness; changes in taste; sensitivity to light; depression.

How should I take Orap (pimozide)?
|
How much medicine you take/give and how often you take/give it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Orap (pimozide) you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Orap (pimozide) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take or give Orap (pimozide) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking Orap (pimozide). Contact your health care provider if any of the following Parkinson-like symptoms occur: Muscle restlessness; tremors; drooling; muscle stiffness/rigidity; shuffling walk; unusual eye movements. Involuntary and uncontrollable movements may develop in patients taking Orap (pimozide). Occurrence is highest among the elderly, especially women. The risk of developing these involuntary movements and the likelihood they will become permanent are increased with long-term use and with high doses. However it is possible to develop these symptoms after short-term treatment at low doses. Contact your health care provider at once if any of the following occur: Involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth or jaw (eg, protrusion of tongue, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements), sometimes accompanied by involuntary movements of the arms and legs. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) has been associated with Orap (pimozide). Symptoms include increased body heat; rigid muscles; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; irregular pulse and blood pressure; increased heart rate; sweating; irregular heart rhythm. Contact your doctor at once if any of these symptoms occur. Orap (pimozide) may cause drowsiness or changes in vision. Use caution when driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Orap (pimozide) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Lab tests will be required while taking Orap (pimozide). Be sure to keep appointments. Consult a health care provider before giving Orap (pimozide) to children under 12 years of age. Do not stop taking/giving Orap (pimozide) without checking with your doctor. Do not take/give more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken or given too much of Orap (pimozide). Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking/giving Orap (pimozide). Do not take/give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take/give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
