What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol)?

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular (heart)side effects from the use of Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). The risk increases with age and with heavy smoking (15 or more cigarettes a day) and is quite marked in women over 35 years of age. Women who use Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) or other birth control pills should be strongly advised to discontinue smoking while taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). Progesterone is the primary progestin hormone produced by the female ovaries. Progestins normally prepare the uterus (womb) for implantation of a fertilized egg. They are also needed for the maintenance of a normal pregnancy. However, when given as prescription medicines they can prevent ovulation and inhibit uterine contractions.

What are the side effects of Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol)?

Most severe:  Sharp chest pain; coughing up blood; sudden shortness of breath; pain in the groin or calf; crushing chest pain or heaviness in the chest; missed menstrual period; severe headache or vomiting; dizziness; fainting; vision or speech disturbances; weakness or numbness in the arm or leg; breast lumps; severe pain or tenderness in the stomach area; yellowing of the skin or eyes accompanied by fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, dark-colored urine, or light-colored bowel movements; severe depression; sudden complete or partial loss of vision; difficulty sleeping; weakness; lack of energy; fatigue; mood changes; unusually heavy vaginal bleeding.
Most common: Abdominal cramps and bloating; breakthrough bleeding; spotting; change in menstrual flow; dysmenorrhea; amenorrhea during and after treatment; temporary infertility after discontinuance of treatment; edema; chloasma or melasma which may persist; breast changes: tenderness, enlargement, and secretion; change in weight (increase or decrease); endocervical hyperplasias; possible diminution in lactation when given immediately postpartum; cholestatic jaundice; migraine; increase in size of uterine leiomyomata; rash (allergic); mental depression; reduced tolerance to carbohydrates; vaginal candidiasis; premenstrual-like syndrome; intolerance to contact lenses; change in corneal curvature (steepening); cataracts; optic neuritis; retinal thrombosis; changes in libido; chorea; changes in appetite; cystitis-like syndrome; rhinitis; headache; nervousness; dizziness; hirsutism; loss of scalp hair; erythema multiforme; erythema nodosum; hemorrhagic eruption; vaginitis; porphyria; impaired renal function; Raynaud's phenomenon; auditory disturbances; hemolytic uremic syndrome; pancreatitis.

How should I take Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol)?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Be sure to read the instructions that come with the medication before you start taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol), especially anytime you are not sure what to do. You may feel sick or experience spotting or bleeding when you begin taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). If you feel sick, stop taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). Usually, these problems go away. If they do not go away, contact your health care provider or health care professional. Spotting or light bleeding may also be caused by missing to take Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). On the days that you take 2 Tablet to make up for missing, you may feel a little sick to the stomach. If you experience vomiting or diarrhea for any reason or take some other medications, including some antibiotics, Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) may not work as well. Use a back-up method to prevent becoming pregnant until you check with your health care provider. If you have trouble remembering to take the pill, ask your health care provider about how to make taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) easier or about another method of birth control. Decide when what time of the day you want to take the medication. Take Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) at the same time every day. Always have another method of birth control and an extra full medication pack ready at all times. Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) does not protect against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. Look to see if your medication pack has either 21 or 28 Tablet. The 21-tablet pack has 21 white or green Tablet to be taken for 3 weeks followed by a week without taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). The 28-tablet pack has either 21 white or green Tablet to be taken for 3 weeks followed by 1 week of brown "reminder" Tablet or 7 white Tablet, 7 light peach Tablet, 7 peach Tablet to be taken for 3 weeks followed by 1 week of green reminder Tablet. Find on the medication pack where to start taking Ortho (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol), in what order to take the medication (follow the arrows), and the week numbers shown on the medication pack. For a Day 1 start, take the 1st white or green tablet during the 1st 24 hours of your menstrual cycle. You will not need to use a back-up method of birth control. For a Sunday start, take the 1st white or green pill of the 1st pack on the Sunday after your menstrual cycle starts, even if you are still bleeding. If your period begins on Sunday, start the medication pack the same day. Use another birth control method as a birth control method if you have a sexual encounter anytime from the Sunday you start your 1st pack until the next Sunday (7 days). Do not skip taking the Tablet even if you are spotting or bleeding between monthly menstrual cycles or feel sick to your stomach. When using the 21-day pack, if you finish a pack or switch your brand of medication, wait 7 days to start the new pack. You will probably have your menstrual cycle during those 7 days. Be sure that no more than 7 days pass between 21-day packs. When using the 28-day pack, if you finish a pack or switch your brand of medication, start the new medication pack on the day after your last "reminder" tablet. Do not wait any days between packs. If you forget to take any of the 7 brown or green "reminder" Tablet in week 4, throw away the Tablet that you missed. Keep taking 1 pill each day until the pack is empty. You don't need a back-up method to avoid becoming pregnant. If you are not sure about the Tablet you have missed, use a back-up method every time you have a sexual encounter. Keep taking 1 white, green, light peach, or peach tablet each day until you can reach the health care provider. If you miss 1 white, green, light peach, or peach tablet, take it as soon as you remember. Take the next pill at your regular time. This means that you may take 2 Tablet in 1 day. You do not
