Description
Indications
Calcitriol topical is prescribed for the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis, a skin condition characterized by the formation of red, scaly patches on certain areas of the body. Calcitriol belongs to a class of medications known as vitamin D analogs. It functions by halting the production of excess skin cells that can accumulate and create scales on the skin, as well as by reducing the activity of immune cells in the skin.
Uses and Dosage
Calcitriol is available as an ointment for topical application to the skin. It’s typically applied twice daily, in the morning and evening. Ensure consistency by applying it around the same times daily.
Adhere to the prescribed dosage precisely; do not exceed or decrease it, or apply it more frequently than instructed by your doctor. Your doctor will specify the amount of ointment to apply.
For children aged 2 to 6 years, do not exceed one tube (100 gm) of calcitriol ointment per week. For adults and children aged 7 years and older, do not exceed two tubes (200 gm) of calcitriol ointment per week.
Apply calcitriol ointment exclusively to the affected areas of skin affected by plaque psoriasis. Avoid application to healthy skin or any areas on your face, eyes, lips, or vagina. Refrain from swallowing the medication.
Gently rub the ointment into the affected skin until no medication is visible. Do not cover the treated skin with a bandage or dressing unless instructed by your doctor to do so.
After applying calcitriol ointment, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
