Description

Indications

Sodium clodronate is used in combination with other drugs to mitigate the breakdown of bone caused by cancer that has metastasized to the bones. It is also employed to treat elevated levels of calcium in the blood, which can be associated with certain cancers. Sodium clodronate functions by slowing down bone loss and reducing the release of calcium from the bones into the bloodstream. This medication falls under the category of drugs known as bisphosphonates.

Uses and Dosage

Take sodium clodronate by mouth without food as prescribed by your doctor, usually 1 to 2 times a day. It should be taken on an empty stomach, either 1 to 2 hours before or 1 to 2 hours after eating. The specific timing may vary depending on the brand you use, so it’s essential to follow the instructions for your particular brand.

Consume sodium clodronate with a full glass of plain water (6 to 8 ounces, 180 to 240 milliliters). Avoid taking it with milk or any other beverage. Swallow the medication whole. After taking it, maintain an upright position (sitting, standing, or walking) and refrain from lying down for at least 30 minutes.

Do not take sodium clodronate simultaneously with food or other medications, as they may hinder its absorption. Take this medication 1 to 2 hours (depending on your brand) before or 1 to 2 hours after any products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, or zinc. This includes antacids, certain forms of didanosine (chewable/dispersible buffered tablets or pediatric oral solution), quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products (such as milk, yogurt), and calcium-enriched juice.

Stay well-hydrated during the course of treatment with this medication, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

The dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed amount.

Take this medication regularly to derive the maximum benefit. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.

Ensure you attend all medical and laboratory appointments so that your doctor can monitor the calcium levels in your blood.

Some brands may contain soya lecithin from soybeans, which could be problematic for individuals with soy or peanut allergies.
  • Disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have kidney disease, difficulty sitting upright or standing for at least 30 minutes, painful swallowing, or issues with the esophagus, stomach, or intestines.
  • Some individuals taking sodium clodronate may experience serious jawbone problems. Your doctor should examine your mouth before initiating this medication. Inform your dentist that you are taking sodium clodronate before any dental procedures.

  • Before undergoing any surgery, especially dental procedures, inform your doctor and dentist about your use of this medication and any other products you are taking, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products. Your doctor or dentist may advise you to discontinue sodium clodronate before the surgery, so seek specific instructions regarding stopping or starting this medication.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Sodium clodronate may persist in your body for an extended period. Pregnancy is not recommended while using sodium clodronate, as it may pose risks to the unborn baby.
