Description
Indications
This combination medication is used for the treatment of elevated eye pressure caused by glaucoma (specifically, open-angle type) or other eye diseases, such as ocular hypertension. This medication comprises two active ingredients, brimonidine and timolol, which are co-administered when a single agent is insufficient in controlling intraocular pressure.
Brimonidine works by allowing better fluid drainage. It is classified as an alpha agonist. Timolol is thought to work by decreasing the amount of fluid formed in the eye and is categorized as a beta blocker.
Uses and Dosage
The ophthalmic formulation of brimonidine is a liquid solution intended for administration by instillation into the eyes. Typically, the affected eye(s) are treated three times daily, with efforts made to ensure an approximately 8-hour interval between each of the three daily doses.
Follow the instructions provided on the prescription label meticulously, and in case of any confusion, consult with the prescribing doctor or pharmacist. The use of brimonidine eye drops should adhere strictly to the prescribed regimen, with no deviations in dosage frequency or quantity.
While brimonidine eye drops can manage the underlying condition, they do not effect a cure. As such, continue using the medication even if symptoms appear to subside. The cessation of brimonidine eye drops should only be done under the guidance of a medical professional.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
