Description
Indications
Spinosad chewable tablets are a veterinary medicine prescribed to treat and prevent flea infestations in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. Spinosad contains the insecticides spinosyn A and spinosyn D. These spinosyn molecules work by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in fleas, leading to involuntary muscle contractions, paralysis, and ultimately death of the insects.
Uses and Dosage
Spinosad is given orally once a month at a recommended minimum dosage of 13.5 mg/lb (30 mg/kg).
Do not use the dosing schedule below for cats, as it can result in underdosage.
Dogs over 120 lbs should receive the appropriate combination of tablets.
Administer spinosad with food for maximum effectiveness.
Spinosad is a chewable tablet readily consumed by dogs when offered by the owner just before feeding. Alternatively, it can be offered in food or administered like other tablet medications. Spinosad should be given at monthly intervals.
If vomiting occurs within an hour of administration, redose with another full dose. If a dose is missed, administer spinosad with food and resume the monthly dosing schedule.
Treatment with spinosad can begin at any time of the year, ideally starting one month before fleas become active and continuing monthly through the end of flea season. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with spinosad should continue year-round without interruption.
To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, you should treat all animals within the household with an approved flea protection product.

In such cases, your veterinarian may adjust the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
