Description

Indications

Vaginal miconazole is employed for the treatment of vaginal yeast infections in adults and children aged 12 years and older. Miconazole belongs to a class of antifungal medications known as imidazoles. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the growth of fungi responsible for causing infections.

Uses and Dosage

Vaginal miconazole is provided in the form of a cream or suppository, intended for insertion into the vagina. The cream can also be applied to the skin around the outer area of the vagina. Suppositories are available for one-time use (Monistat 1) or for a once-daily application at bedtime over a period of 3 consecutive days (Monistat 3). The vaginal cream is used once daily at bedtime for a 7-day duration (Monistat 7).

Use miconazole exactly as directed—do not exceed or reduce the recommended amount, nor should you use it more frequently than indicated on the package or prescribed by your doctor.

Vaginal miconazole is available without a prescription (over the counter). If you are experiencing vaginal itching and discomfort for the first time, consult with a doctor before using miconazole. However, if you’ve been previously diagnosed with a yeast infection and are experiencing similar symptoms again, use the vaginal cream or suppositories as directed on the package.

Refrain from engaging in vaginal intercourse or using other vaginal products (such as tampons, douches, or spermicides) during the course of your treatment.

You should start experiencing relief within the initial three days of miconazole treatment. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, contact your doctor.

When applying the external miconazole cream, use your finger to apply a small amount to the affected area of the skin around the outside of the vagina.

For optimal effectiveness, apply the dose before bedtime, and avoid getting up afterward except to wash your hands. Consider using a sanitary napkin during the use of suppositories or vaginal cream to protect clothing against stains.

Continue using miconazole vaginal cream or suppositories even if you get your period during treatment.

Side Effects

Caution

  • Before using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether to this medication, other azole antifungal agents (such as terconazole, fluconazole), or any other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product may provoke allergic reactions or other complications, so consult with your pharmacist for more details.
  • If you have specific health conditions, such as diabetes, immune system problems (e.g., HIV-AIDS), or frequent vaginal yeast infections (more than 3 in 6 months or 4 in 1 year), consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.
  • Discuss with your doctor the appropriateness of engaging in sexual intercourse while using this product, as it may weaken rubber products like latex condoms, diaphragms, and cervical caps, leading to failure and an increased risk of pregnancy.
  • Avoid using these products during treatment and for 3 days after it is completed. Consult your doctor about alternative forms of barrier protection/birth control, such as polyurethane condoms, during this period.
  • If you are pregnant, do not use this medication for self-treatment. During pregnancy, use this medication only if clearly needed, following your doctor’s instructions on how to use the applicator to insert the medication. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
