Description

Indications

Nafarelin nasal spray is employed to address endometriosis, a condition marked by the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus, leading to infertility, menstrual pain, discomfort during intercourse, and abnormal bleeding. It is also utilized in the treatment of central precocious puberty (CPP) in both boys and girls. CPP triggers premature puberty, hastening bone growth and the development of sexual characteristics. Nafarelin belongs to a class of drugs known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, which function by reducing the levels of specific hormones in the body.

Uses and Dosage

Nafarelin is dispensed as a liquid solution for nasal spray administration.

Adhere strictly to the prescribed usage of nafarelin. Do not exceed or reduce the dosage, nor use it more frequently than directed by your doctor.

For the treatment of endometriosis, nafarelin nasal spray is typically administered twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart, with one spray in each nostril in the morning and evening, totaling 2 sprays per day. Initiate nafarelin between the second and fourth days of your menstrual cycle. After two months and depending on your response, your doctor may escalate the dosage to one spray in each nostril twice daily, totaling 4 sprays per day. Treatment duration usually spans about 6 months.

If nafarelin nasal spray is utilized to address precocious puberty, it is typically sprayed in each nostril 2 or 3 times daily. When administered twice daily, it is typically applied as 2 sprays in each nostril, totaling 8 sprays per day.

Alternatively, it may be used as 3 sprays in alternating nostrils 3 times a day, totaling 9 sprays per day.

Avoid sneezing or blowing your nose during or immediately after using nafarelin nasal spray, as this may diminish its efficacy.

Before initial use, carefully read the written instructions accompanying the nasal spray. Should you have any queries regarding its usage, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Refrain from discontinuing the use of nafarelin nasal spray without consulting your doctor.

Caution

  • Before initiating nafarelin treatment, disclose to your doctor or pharmacist any known allergies to nafarelin, GnRH, or other GnRH-like hormones, such as leuprolide, or any other allergies you may have. Inactive ingredients in the product may also trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
  • Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have experienced unexplained abnormal vaginal bleeding, smoke, consume alcohol daily, have a history of bone loss (osteoporosis) or a family history of osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian disease, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels, seizures, or mental/mood problems like depression.
  • Nafarelin must not be used during pregnancy, as it poses risks to the unborn baby. Women should commence this medication between days 2 and 4 of their menstrual cycle. While using this drug, menstrual periods and ovulation may cease; however, this is not a reliable contraceptive method. Discuss alternative non-hormonal birth control options, such as condoms or a diaphragm with spermicide, with your doctor. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or suspect pregnancy.
  • The passage of nafarelin into breast milk is uncertain. Due to potential risks to the infant, breastfeeding is not recommended during nafarelin treatment.
