Description

Indications

Cimetidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers and is utilized in the treatment of several conditions such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Over-the-counter cimetidine can be used to prevent and relieve symptoms of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach by reducing the production of acid in the stomach.

Uses and Dosage

To ensure maximum benefit from this medication, take it orally as directed by your healthcare provider, with or without food. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

If your doctor has recommended antacids for stomach pain relief, take them at least an hour apart from this medication.

Take this medication regularly as prescribed, ideally at the same time(s) every day, to help you remember. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or frequency of administration.

Even if your symptoms improve, continue taking this medication for the prescribed duration of treatment. Discontinuing treatment prematurely may delay the healing process.

For self-treatment of acid indigestion or heartburn with over-the-counter cimetidine, take one tablet orally with a glass of water as required. To prevent heartburn, take one tablet orally with a glass of water immediately before or up to 30 minutes before consuming foods or drinks that trigger heartburn. Do not take more than two tablets within a 24-hour period, unless directed otherwise by your physician. Do not take for more than 14 consecutive days without consulting your doctor.

Inform your physician if your symptoms persist or worsen.

Prior to using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have immune system disorders, kidney or liver problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, or other stomach issues such as tumors.

Some symptoms may indicate a more serious condition. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience heartburn along with lightheadedness, sweating, or dizziness, chest/jaw/shoulder/arm pain (particularly with shortness of breath or unusual sweating), or unexplained weight loss.

If you intend to self-treat with this medication, seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of a severe condition: difficulty/pain when swallowing food, bloody vomit, vomit that resembles coffee grounds, bloody or black stools, heartburn for more than three months, frequent chest pain, frequent wheezing, nausea/vomiting, or stomach pain.

This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you are sure it is safe.

Do not use this medication to treat children under the age of 12 unless directed by your doctor.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly confusion and lung infections. Confusion can increase the risk of falls.
