Description
Indications
Fenofibrate is categorized as an antilipemic agent. It is typically prescribed in conjunction with a low-fat diet, exercise, and occasionally other medications to lower the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood while also increasing the amount of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) in the blood.
High levels of cholesterol and fats in the arteries can lead to atherosclerosis, which reduces blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body, increasing the risk of heart disease, chest pain, strokes, and heart attacks. Fenofibrate operates by accelerating the natural processes that eliminate cholesterol from the body.
Uses and Dosage
Fenofibrate is available in capsule, delayed-release capsule, and tablet forms, which are taken orally. Generally, it is taken once daily. Some brands should be taken with food, while others can be taken with or without food. If you’re unsure whether you should take your medication with food, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Avoid taking more or less fenofibrate than prescribed or taking it more frequently than directed.
Your physician will typically initiate treatment with an average fenofibrate dose and may adjust it based on the results of laboratory tests to measure the levels of fatty substances in your blood. If your test results do not show improvement after two months, your doctor may advise you to discontinue taking fenofibrate.
Do not crush, chew, or break delayed-release tablets; swallow them whole. Avoid using any tablets that are broken or chipped.
Fenofibrate only reduces the amount of fatty substances in your blood while you continue taking it. Even if you feel well, do not stop taking fenofibrate without first consulting your doctor.
