Indications
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic utilized in the treatment of specific bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and infections affecting the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive organs. It is also effective in managing or preventing disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection, which is a type of lung infection that commonly occurs in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Uses and Dosage
Azithromycin is available in tablet, extended-release suspension (long-acting liquid), and suspension (liquid) forms for oral administration.
Zithromax tablets and suspension are typically taken once daily with or without food for a period of 1-5 days. For the prevention of disseminated MAC infection, azithromycin tablets are generally taken once weekly, with or without food. The extended-release suspension is taken as a one-time dose on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal). To ensure consistency, azithromycin should be taken at the same time each day. Adhere to the prescribed dosage and do not take more or less of it or take it more frequently than prescribed by your doctor.
Before use, shake the liquid well to ensure uniformity of the medication. Employ a dosing spoon, oral syringe, or measuring cup to measure the exact amount of medication. Rinse the measuring device with water after taking the full dose of medication.
If you receive a single-dose, 1-gram packet of azithromycin powder for suspension, you must first mix it with water before administration. Mix the contents of the 1-gram packet with 1/4 cup (60 mL) of water in a glass and consume the entire contents immediately. Add an additional 1/4 cup (60 mL) of water to the same glass, mix, and consume the entire contents to ensure that you receive the entire dose.
If you receive azithromycin extended-release suspension as a dry powder, you must first add water to the bottle before use. Open the bottle by pressing down on the cap and twisting. Measure 1/4 cup (60 mL) of water and add to the bottle. Close the bottle tightly, and shake well to mix. Use the azithromycin extended-release suspension within 12 hours of receiving it from the pharmacy or after adding water to the powder.
If vomiting occurs within an hour of taking azithromycin, contact your doctor immediately. Your doctor will advise you on whether or not to take another dose. Do not take another dose unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

Azithromycin has the potential to cause QT prolongation, which is a condition that affects the rhythm of the heart. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase the risk of QT prolongation. This risk may be higher if you are taking certain drugs like diuretics, commonly referred to as “water pills,” or if you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
Azithromycin may interfere with the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines, such as typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking azithromycin before receiving any immunizations or vaccinations.
Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly QT prolongation.
