Description
Indications
Indinavir is employed in conjunction with other medications to address human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
Classified as a protease inhibitor, indinavir functions by reducing the quantity of HIV in the blood. While indinavir does not offer a cure for HIV, it may diminish the likelihood of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related conditions like severe infections or cancer.
Uses and Dosage
Indinavir is available in capsule form for oral administration. Typically, it is taken every 8 hours (three times a day).
Follow a consistent schedule by taking indinavir around the same times each day. Take indinavir precisely as directed—avoid taking more or less than prescribed or altering the frequency without consulting your doctor.
Consume indinavir on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals, with water, skim or nonfat milk, juice, coffee, or tea. However, if indinavir causes stomach upset, it can be taken with a light meal, such as dry toast or cornflakes with skim or nonfat milk. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist regarding suitable foods to be taken with indinavir.
Do not crush or chew the capsule, although it can be opened and mixed with fruit puree (such as banana).
Continue taking indinavir even if you feel well. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor.
In case you experience certain side effects, your doctor may need to interrupt your treatment. Ensure to communicate how you are feeling during your indinavir treatment.
