Description
Indications
Diflucan, an oral antifungal medication, is offered in both tablet and liquid forms and is indicated for the treatment of fungal infections that can impact a variety of body regions, including the mouth, throat, esophagus, lungs, bladder, genital area, and blood. The medication functions by inhibiting the proliferation of specific fungal strains, thereby effectively treating and preventing infections.
Diflucan can also be used against fungal infections in individuals with weakened immune systems resulting from cancer treatment, bone marrow transplantation, or immunocompromised conditions such as AIDS.
Uses and Dosage
Prior to initiation of treatment with fluconazole, review the Patient Information Leaflet if provided by your pharmacist.
Fluconazole should be administered orally with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider, typically on a daily basis.
In the event that the liquid suspension form of the medication is prescribed, ensure to shake the bottle thoroughly prior to each dose. Accurately measure the dose using a designated measuring device or spoon, as using a household spoon may result in an incorrect dose.
The dosage regimen is based on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment, and in pediatric patients, is also based on weight. In general, the dose should not exceed 600 milligrams per day in children unless specifically directed by the physician.

Caution
Prior to using fluconazole, inform your physician or pharmacist of any allergies you may have, including to other azole antifungal drugs or any other substances. The medication may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications. Provide your medical history, particularly regarding liver or kidney disease, to your doctor or pharmacist before using fluconazole.
Fluconazole has the potential to cause a heart rhythm condition known as QT prolongation, which can rarely result in serious, and at times fatal, fast or irregular heartbeat and other symptoms such as severe dizziness or fainting. The risk of QT prolongation may be heightened by certain medical conditions or concurrent use of other drugs that can cause QT prolongation. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications being taken and to discuss any heart problems, including heart failure, slow heartbeat, or family history of QT prolongation or sudden cardiac death.
Fluconazole should only be used during pregnancy if deemed necessary by your physician. Its use during the first trimester of pregnancy can harm the unborn baby. Reliable forms of birth control should be considered during treatment and for one week after stopping fluconazole. For the treatment of vaginal yeast infections, alternative topical medications should be considered prior to using fluconazole. The potential risks and benefits should be discussed with your doctor.
