The King of Pop, Michael Jackson Dies from a Cardiac Arrest. How to Notice the First Signs of Cardiac Arrest

Last week the world suffered a tragic blow, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson died at the age of 50. He was, and always will be one of the most influential figures in all of music. Whether or not you believed many of the rumors spread about him in the media, Michael Jackson was a great man who gave back to the world, and truly strived to make a difference. He donated his time, money, and efforts to at least 39 different charities. Sadly, while Jackson was preparing for a comeback tour, his incredible life would be brought to its untimely end by a cardiac arrest.

With the horrible news of Michael Jackson passing, I would like to make sure everyone knows what exactly a cardiac arrest is, and how to notice the warning signs. A cardiac arrest is described as the sudden, abrupt loss of heart function. Death can occur within minutes after symptoms appear, so every second counts. Furthermore, even if the victim is saved, he/she could receive permanent brain damage if left too long without treatment.

There are no available statistics for the number of cardiac arrests that occur each year. Although, it’s estimated that about 95% of victims die before reaching the hospital. However, when defibrillation is administered within 5 to 7 minutes, the survival rate of the victim is increased to about 30-45%.

Knowing how to spot a cardiac arrest is one of the most crucial steps to surviving it. During a cardiac arrest the victim loses consciousness, stops normal breathing and loses pulse and blood pressure. If you spot any of these, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1. Those few seconds may be the difference between life and death.

The American Heart Association recommends these three steps in the event of a cardiac arrest.

  • Know the warning signs of cardiac arrest. During cardiac arrest a victim loses consciousness, stops normal breathing and loses pulse and blood pressure.
  • Call 9-1-1 immediately to access the emergency medical system if you see any cardiac arrest warning signs.
  • Give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to help keep the cardiac arrest victim alive until emergency help arrives. CPR keeps blood and oxygen flowing to the heart and brain until defibrillation can be administered.

Rest in peace Michael, you’ve earned it.
